Mr. Cormac! I love this picture of him. This was when he was just a little baby boy and was OBSESSED with his flying squirrel. He just thought it was absolutely incredible. I picked it up at TJ Maxx on a whim and it was the biggest hit for him. Since the time that we’ve had Cormac (from November 2018) and Keira (March 2020), we’ve gone through A LOT of toys. And let me tell you, if someone is going to be a toy tester… it is going to be Cormac, the number one toy enthusiast.
Don’t worry, he’ll tell you if a toy is good or bad. He failed training class because of this very obsession. We got to the point where we had to tell him to “leave it” in reference to toys on the floor, and he just couldn’t do it. He’d run at the toy, destroy it, and then go on to the next one as we yelled “Leave it Cormac, leave it!” He’d just be over there in his own world, mauling a stuffed penguin. I’ll never forget these final words from our trainer, before we never returned to class: “Well, I greatly underestimated his obsession with toys.” That you did, Chris, that you did.
So, to give you the low down on the best toys out there, according to Mr. Cormac and Little Miss Baby Keira, here is the verdict:
GoDog Toys with Chew Guard Technology are a family favorite. Yes, these toys are doggie and mama approved. The dogs are obsessed with them because they crinkle and squeak and they’re dinosaurs and dragons, so how cool is that?! Mama loves them because they’ve withstood the test of time. Some of their squeakers are even still intact. And they don’t have any fluff so they can’t be gutted. But, they can be beheaded and dismembered (see Puff the Headless Dragon above, who sadly had to undergo surgery but is still a favorite). The only toy that’s been spared is Ellie the Elephant, who Cormac has a particular affection for and likes to snuffle up to at bedtime. Keira prefers to snuggle up with her baby, the Top Paw realistic raccoon.
Anything Kong and Chuckit! are also family favorites. Kong makes a blue square, red circle, peanut butter kong, and a frisbee, all of which Cormac is partial to. He also is obsessed with the flying squirrel (see above) as well as any of the orange Chuckit! balls. You can’t go wrong with a good ball or frisbee for a labrador retriever.
Aside from the frisbee and Ellie the elephant, Cormac’s other favorite toy has to be his JW Pet rings, which he can be seen snuggling with above. The rings are very stimulating for him, and he loves gnawing on them then subsequently thrashing them around over his head, and they’re a great tug o’war toy. He also loves the JW Pet Hol-ee ball, which you can also stuff treats in to to keep your dog entertained.
And finally, Cormac loves anything that squeaks, including the Barkparty squeaker toy which looks like he’s a booze hound, as well as the Top Paw squeakable fire hose toys which have really stood the test of time. They are Cormac and Keira approved! Keira particularly loves the Crocodile fire hose (linked above), which she lovingly picks up every morning and brings to me as if she’s going, “mama, look what I got!” to which I lovingly reply “wow girlie that is so cool!”
