This Dutch Apple Pie recipe has a sweet apple filling paired with a brown sugar streusel topping which melts in your mouth. Although this pie is perfect for crisp fall weather and apple season, it is wonderful accompaniment for any holiday.

This is my grandma’s recipe for apple pie, and it’s what we enjoyed at almost every family holiday. It was my favorite dessert of hers and in my opinion is a perfect recipe for apple pie. I wouldn’t change a thing.

This recipe doesn’t include a pie crust. However, a detailed recipe and information on making a good pie crust can be found here from Erin at Cloudy Kitchen.

This Dutch Apple Pie Has:

  • A sweet apple filling paired with a perfect brown sugar streusel topping which melts in your mouth. The streusel topping makes it unique and sets it apart from traditional apple pie (and in my opinion makes it all the more better!)
  • Brown sugar, apples, and cinnamon, making it the perfect dessert for crisp fall weather and apple season.
  • A filling consisting of somewhat tart apples, which beautifully compliments the sweet brown sugar streusel, making it not too sweet.

Ingredients for Dutch Apple Pie:

  • Granulated sugar: Combines with the apple slices, cinnamon, and salt to create the sweet, jam-like filling.
  • Cinnamon: Provides depth to the filling and enhances the flavor of the apples.
  • Salt: Balances the sweetness of the apples and granulated sugar.
  • Apple slices: Can’t make apple pie without apples!
  • All purpose flour: Acts as a base to the crumble topping.
  • Brown sugar: Provides a sweet molasses flavor to the crumble topping, and perfectly pairs with the apples and cinnamon.
  • Butter: Makes the crumble topping flaky and melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

Tips to Make the Best Dutch Apple Pie:

  1. Use a variety of apples to get a complex sweet and tart flavor profile. Half tart and half sweet is the most delicious combination, but you also want your apples to have a crisp texture. A good combination would be half Granny Smith and half sweet apples like Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or Fuji.
  2. This pie can be made ahead of time. When ready to bake, just pull out of the fridge and pop it in the oven. It also freezes really well. Just pull it out the day of the event and let thaw to serve cold, or reheat in the oven to serve warm.
